Cultural Background of Panihati Municipal Area
 
LITERATURE
 
  1. Girindra Mohini Dasi of Panihati was an eminent poetess of ancient Bengal. Ashrukana, Janaika Hindu Mohilar Kabita, Bharat Kusum, Abhash, Swadeshini, Sindhugatha etc. were her famous creations. She was the editor of Jahnnabi magazine.
  2. Phanindra Nath Mukhopadhyay  was a great writer and journalist of Agarpara associated with Dainik Basumati, Bharatbarsha, Jugantar etc. In 1939 he became the editor of Bharatbarsh and in 1927 Banglar Katha.
  3. Ram Sen of Natagarh was a novelist and associated with the magazine Shanibarer Chithi.
  4. Shantashil Das of Sukchar wrote various poems at Prabasi, Bharatbarsha, Sadhana etc. He has published many books on poetry. He was a teacher of Panihati Trannath High School.
  5. Prof. Dr. Paresh Chandra Majumder of Natagarh was a famous multi-linguist and Head of the Bengali Dept. (Calcutta University). He was awwarded Rabindra Puroshkar in 1972 for a documentary named Sanskrita O Prakita Bhashar Krama Bikash.
  6. Sri Rabin Bal of Ushumpur was the editor of Kishore Gayan Biggayan magazine. In 1997 he got the Rabindra Puroshkar award for writing Banglar Biggayan Charcha.
  7. Former school teacher of Sodepur High School Sadhan Chattopadhyay of Panihati started as a writer of Nandan magazine in 1966. In 1987 he was awarded by B.F.J for best author and in 1997 he was awarded with the Soumen Chanda Purashkar by the Govt. of W. Bengal. Nagpash, Agnidagdha Gohin-gandha etc are his famous creations.
  8. Shibasish Mukhopadhyay  of Sukchar is a new generation poet. He has written many poems. He was awarded Bangla Academy Prize. He is also a theatre personality and associated with Sukchar Group.
  9. Krishanu Bhattachrjee of Sodepur has written many books. His interest on the local history and eminent personalities has been making a significant contribution. Some of his publications are: Panihati Parikrama, Dr.Gopal Chatterjee, Jom Dutter Dairy, Bharatbarsa sampadak Phanindranath Mukhopadhay, Sangbadik Dadathakur etc.
  10. Prof. Chanchal Kr Chatterjee of Agorpara, (Ex-Prof of Presidency College) has written a book- Agorparar Itibritta which covers the history of the Agarpara and Panihati.
  11. Prof. Subhankar Ghosh - Poet, Social Worker and Writer. He has many books like 'Mohanai Hete Jachhi, Unis Sotoker Bangla Sahitya Kolkata, Rini Achi, Sahiteyar Rupvhed etc. He is a regular participant in the cultural programmes. He has received many distinctions and awards.
  12. Many popular little magazines were published from Panihati municipal area in different times like, Khardaha Thana Samachar, Ingeet, Oikataan etc.

MUSIC AND INSTRUMENTS
 
  1. During the twentieth century Girish Ch. Chattopadhyay and his two sons Ramchandra and Shib Chandra Chattopadhyay were very famous classical musicians of Panihati. Girish Chandra was attached with the Sangeet Nitralaya of earlier Bengal.
  2. Upen Mitra and Shital Mukherjee of Panihati were eminent classical musicians.
  3. Anukul Mukherjee was a great classical singer and Suren Mukherjee was a great Pankhoraj player of Panihati.
  4. Dasharathi Sankhyatirtha was a music lover and Nagendranath Chakraborty was a music director of Agarpara.
  5. Ramchandra Mitra was a great violin player. He was the father of Satkari Mitra.

ART AND SCULPTURE
 
  1. Sansar Chandra Sen Ray Bahadur was a famous painter of Natagarh. He was greatly loved by the Maharaja of Jaipur.
  2. Chitra Niketan  was a famous art training centre, run by Krantikal group of Panihati. Ashok Das , Navendu Sen etc. were its famous artists.
  3. Rupayan was a famous art training centre of Panihati. It was made by great Portrait artist, Sunil Chattopadhyay.
  4. Mrinal Ghosh is a great art critic of Panihati. He wrote many books on art.
  5. Kamal Sarkar  was a great cartoonist. Kolkatar Statue was made by him.
