Waterways
The Hooghly is the major river which flows all along the western stretch of about 50 km of the Barrackpore subdivision. This river is also known as the Bhagirathi or the Ganga / Ganges.
The river 'Ganga' has been an important waterway. Many industries came up on the banks of this river, big factories were set up during the British time. The Dutch, British, Portuguese and French businessmen used this river for trade and business transportation.
In this area, some of the prominent Ghats touching this holy, sacred river are: Baromandir Ghat, Nemaitirtha Ghat, Panihati Mahotsabtala Ghat, Giribala Ghat at Agarpara, Tranbabu's Ghat, Sen's Ghat, Bazarpara Ghat etc.
